A carbon credit is an electronic document certifying that one tonne of CO2 has been avoided or sequestered (removed from the atmosphere) by a project. A good quality project must be:
Additional: The project would not have been possible without the sale of the carbon credits generated;
Measurable: The amount of CO2 avoided or sequestered is quantifiable and verifiable;
Permanent: CO2 sequestration is long-term and irreversible;
Local: The project is as close as possible to the CO2 emissions to be compensated.
