As the pressure to decarbonize transport continues to grow, carriers and shippers are increasingly looking for concrete solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of their operations. In Occitanie, a unique initiative now allows transport professionals to test a hydrogen-powered truck through a short-term leasing program, directly within their real operating conditions. This represents a unique opportunity to experiment with this technology before considering a larger-scale deployment.
A unique trial featuring the HyT44 1st Edition hydrogen truck
As part of the European Corridor H₂ project, the Occitanie Region, Hyliko and Qair are offering transport operators and shippers the opportunity to test the HyT44 1st Edition hydrogen truck free of charge from March 16 to May 19, 2026.
These trials will take place at the DH’Occ hydrogen stations in Béziers and Narbonne, enabling professionals to experience both the driving and refuelling of a hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck.
Participants will be able to test the vehicle:
- independently, within their daily logistics operations
- or with technical support, to facilitate the onboarding process
The objective is simple: to allow transport operators to evaluate hydrogen technology within their own logistics environment.
Occitanie: a pioneering region for hydrogen
This initiative is part of the ambitious strategy of the Occitanie Region, which has made hydrogen a cornerstone of its energy transition.
The Corridor H₂ project aims to develop a European hydrogen mobility network connecting the Mediterranean to the North Sea. In Occitanie, this corridor focuses in particular on the A9, A61, A20 and A68 highways.
The goal is clear: to accelerate the energy transition of heavy-duty transport by building a complete hydrogen ecosystem.
An ecosystem already taking shape
One of the main barriers to the adoption of new technologies in transport is the availability of infrastructure.
In Occitanie, this ecosystem is already being structured. Several hydrogen stations are already operational or under development, including in: Blagnac, Toulouse-Sud, Saint-Sulpice-la-Pointe, Béziers and Narbonne.
Green hydrogen production is also expanding in the region, with:
- the Lhyfe electrolysis plant in Bessières, already producing hydrogen
- the Hyd’Occ site in Port-La-Nouvelle, which will become one of the largest hydrogen production facilities in France
Hydrogen trucks: a credible alternative to diesel
The hydrogen trucks developed by Hyliko are designed to meet the operational constraints of heavy-duty transport.
The new-generation vehicles offer:
- up to 500 km of range at full load
- fast refuelling comparable to diesel
- zero tailpipe emissions
- operational availability above 95%
These characteristics make hydrogen particularly suitable for intensive road freight applications such as long-haul transport, refrigerated logistics, or construction-site operations.
Accelerating the decarbonization of road transport
In Occitanie, transport remains one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Developing alternative mobility solutions is therefore essential to achieving climate objectives. Short-term hydrogen truck trials represent a key step in accelerating this transition.
